Remembering CD Gopinath: A Cricket Legend

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 9: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed its condolences following the passing of former Indian cricketer CD Gopinath in Chennai. Gopinath was a vital member of India’s first-ever Test-winning squad and played a significant role in the early days of the nation’s cricketing journey.

As per a statement from the BCCI, Gopinath participated in eight Test matches for India from 1951 to 1960, making a remarkable debut with scores of 50 not out and 42 against England. During a time when Indian cricket was still establishing itself globally, he was part of the team that achieved India’s first Test victory against England in 1952 in Madras (now Chennai), a milestone that changed the course of Indian cricket history.

At the domestic level, Gopinath was a key figure in Madras cricket, leading the team and significantly contributing to its development during the early years of Indian domestic cricket. He had a notable first-class career, amassing 4,259 runs across 60 matches. Gopinath also played a crucial role in Madras’ first Ranji Trophy victory in 1954-55, scoring a century in the final to secure the title.

After retiring from playing, he took on the role of national selector, including serving as chairman, and later managed the Indian team during the 1979 tour of England. His long-standing association with cricket earned him respect from players and officials alike, thanks to his deep understanding of the game and his humble demeanor.

BCCI President Mithun Manhas remarked, “CD Gopinath represented a time when Indian cricket was starting to make its mark internationally. His contributions to India and Madras’ early achievements were invaluable. His ongoing involvement with the game as chairman of the selection committee and team manager showcased his unwavering dedication to cricket. We deeply mourn his loss and extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends.”

BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia added, “CD Gopinath was part of a generation that laid the foundation for Indian cricket. Being part of India’s inaugural Test victory is a legacy that will always be cherished. He continued to support the game long after his playing career, maintaining a strong connection with Indian cricket over the years. The BCCI conveys its heartfelt sympathies to his family and loved ones.”
