Historic Comeback in the Quarterfinals
In a thrilling match at the BWF World Championships 2026 held in New Delhi, the Indian women's doubles team of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand achieved a remarkable comeback against China's Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian. This victory in the quarterfinals not only secured them a spot in the semifinals but also guaranteed at least a bronze medal.
After dropping the first game, the Indian pair rallied to win with scores of 16-21, 21-15, and 21-13, in a contest that lasted over 70 minutes at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
The Chinese duo started strong, taking advantage of mistakes from Treesa and Gayatri to lead 1-0. However, the Indian players turned the tide in the second game, enhancing their defense and dominating net play to level the match at 21-15.
Carrying their momentum into the final game, Treesa and Gayatri surged ahead with a 10-5 lead, maintaining pressure on their opponents and ultimately winning 21-13, marking a significant comeback.
With this achievement, they became only the second Indian women's doubles team to earn a medal at the World Championships, following the bronze won by Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa in 2011.
Earlier in the tournament, Treesa and Gayatri showcased their skills with a straight-game victory over Japan's seventh-seeded pair, Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi, winning 21-16, 21-12 in the Round of 16. They set the pace early, demonstrating sharp play and maintaining control throughout the match.
