Travis Head Lauds Usman Khawaja's Impact in Ashes Test Against England
Khawaja's Resilience Shines in Third Ashes Test
Adelaide [Australia], December 19: Travis Head, the prominent opener for Australia, expressed his admiration for veteran batsman Usman Khawaja's performance during the third Ashes Test against England, emphasizing the depth of talent within their squad.
Head noted that any player from their 15-member roster could step up, given the wealth of experience present in the Australian team.
Khawaja, who was sidelined during the second Test due to an injury, made his return to the squad for the third Test. Initially not selected for the playing XI, he was given a chance to play when Steve Smith fell ill, allowing him to join the team.
Seizing the moment, Khawaja scored a vital 82 runs in the first innings, demonstrating his skill and determination, followed by a solid 40 runs in the third innings. His contributions were crucial in establishing a strong position for Australia against England as they concluded Day 3 of the third Ashes Test.
“I’m not surprised; he played exceptionally well again today. That’s the strength we have in our squad of 15. I know he was disappointed earlier this week when he was informed he wouldn’t be playing, but to turn that around and be told on the morning of Day 1 that he was in the lineup must have been a boost. He might have been prepared for this opportunity. I believe anyone in this 15 could be playing, as everyone possesses the necessary experience,” Head remarked, according to cricket.au.com.
As for the match, what began as a promising day for England, highlighted by a remarkable century partnership between captain Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, ended with Australia taking control thanks to Head's century and his partnerships with Khawaja and Alex Carey, putting them ahead at the close of Day 3 at the Adelaide Oval.
At the end of Day 3, England stood at 271/4, with Head (142*) and Carey (52*) not out, leading by 356 runs.
