Trailblazing Indian Army Canoeist Wins Gold at Asian Games Test Event
Historic Achievement in Canoeing
Havildar Megha Pradeep has made history as the first female canoeist to join the Indian Army, achieving a remarkable feat by securing the nation's inaugural gold medal in an international canoeing competition.
At the 2026 Canoe Sprint Asian Games Test Event held in Miyoshi City, she earned two gold medals in the C1 200-meters and C1 500-meters events, along with a silver in the C2 500-meters category, as announced by the Army on Monday.
This event serves as a crucial qualifier for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games in Japan, which will see participation from 45 countries.
Notable Performances by Fellow Army Athletes
In 2025, Oinam Binita Chanu from Odisha also shone by winning gold in kayaking at the Canoe Sprint International President Cup in Uttarakhand, where 21 nations competed. Additionally, Prachi Yadav secured a gold medal at the 2023 Asian Para Games for athletes with disabilities.
It's important to note the distinctions between canoeing and kayaking: canoes are open and utilize a single-bladed paddle, while kayaks are closed-top and employ a double-bladed paddle, affecting balance, speed, and maneuverability.
Army Paddlers Excel at the Event
Alongside Megha, two other Army paddlers excelled at the event, with Naib Subedar Sunil Singh winning gold in both the C1 200-m and C1 500-m events, while Subedar Raju Rawat claimed silver in the C2 500-m category.
The C1 event features a single paddler kneeling in a canoe, using a single-bladed paddle, whereas the C2 event involves two paddlers in an open canoe, requiring synchronized effort.
Intense Training and Historic Recruitment
Canoe sprint is a demanding sport that necessitates exceptional cardiovascular endurance, explosive strength, and remarkable balance, as athletes must kneel in a narrow, unstable boat and paddle on one side.
The athletes trained at the Army Kayaking and Canoeing Node, operated by the Bengal Engineer Group and Centre in Roorkee, Uttarakhand.
Megha's recruitment into the Army Kayak and Canoe Node marks a significant milestone for women in Indian water sports, part of the Army's initiative to recruit talented female athletes following the opening of ranks to women in 2022 under the Agnipath scheme.
Megha's Rising Star in International Canoeing
Her breakthrough moment came at the 2024 Asian Canoe Sprint Championships in Tokyo, where she won a bronze medal in the women's C1 500-m event, contributing to India's medal tally and establishing her status among Asia's top canoeists.
Although she has achieved gold medals at national competitions, the 21-year-old's international journey began with a silver at the 2023 Junior Asian Canoe Sprint Championships and a bronze at the 2024 Asian Canoe Sprint Championships in Tokyo.
At the 2025 U23 World Championships in Portugal, she made history as the first Indian woman to reach the finals of the C1 500-m event, finishing 17th, marking a significant achievement for Indian canoeing on the world stage.
Success of Women Athletes in the Army
Numerous women athletes recruited into the Army have excelled in various sports, securing gold medals in international competitions, including boxing.
