Moody's Insights on the Upcoming WTC Final

New Delhi [India] - Former cricketer Tom Moody has expressed his belief that Australia will edge out South Africa in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, set to commence on Wednesday at Lord's. However, he cautioned that Marco Jansen could pose a significant challenge for the Australian side.

If Australia secures victory against the Proteas, they will make history as the first team to successfully defend the WTC mace.

The team, led by Pat Cummins, has showcased its winning capabilities with notable victories in the WTC 2023 final at The Oval and the ODI World Cup 2023 held in India. Moody anticipates that Australia will rise to the occasion in this crucial match.

"Australia has established a reputation for consistent success in major tournaments. They tend to elevate their performance during ICC events, embracing the challenges of tournament cricket and thriving under pressure," Moody stated during an interview with a Media Channel.

He further emphasized the importance of confidence, noting that many players in the Australian squad have experienced multiple ICC tournament victories and have been inspired by previous generations' successes.

While Moody considers Australia the favorites on paper, he highlighted the potential threat posed by South Africa's fast bowlers. Alongside Kagiso Rabada, he pointed out that Jansen's height and bowling style could create difficulties for the defending champions.

"You can never underestimate Rabada, and Jansen, who stands nearly seven feet tall, brings height, bounce, and swing with the new ball – he will be a genuine threat. Rabada's Test credentials are well-known, as he has consistently delivered for his team," he remarked.

Despite acknowledging South Africa's capabilities, Moody remains confident in Australia's experience, particularly with their seasoned pace attack, including Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc.

"I would still back Australia, not out of bias, but due to their experience. With Hazlewood, Cummins, and Starc – three seasoned pacers who have played numerous Ashes series in England – they are well-acquainted with Lord's. Additionally, Nathan Lyon plays a crucial supporting role," he concluded.
