South Zone Secures Duleep Trophy Final Spot

Captain Tilak Varma delivered another outstanding performance, steering South Zone to the Duleep Trophy final with a convincing seven-wicket victory over North Zone on the final day of their semifinal match on Wednesday.

In pursuit of 181 runs, South Zone accomplished the task within the first two sessions, thanks to an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 80 runs between Tilak (51 not out) and Ravichandran Smaran (32 not out).

South Zone concluded their innings at 182 for three, setting up a title showdown against East Zone in Chennai starting September 6.

Tilak, who previously scored an unbeaten 116 in the first innings, came to bat when his team was struggling at 102 for three.

The left-handed batsman, also serving as India's vice-captain for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan, showcased his skill and composure against North's bowlers, including the aggressive pacer Gurnoor Brar and the crafty left-arm spinner Abid Mushtaq.

Brar challenged him with a barrage of short balls, while Mushtaq took advantage of the pitch's inconsistent bounce to test Tilak's footwork.

Tilak responded brilliantly, executing exquisite off-side drives.

Once he found his rhythm, he employed reverse and paddle sweeps against Mushtaq, bringing South Zone closer to their target.

Smaran proved to be a reliable partner, effectively rotating the strike and occasionally unleashing powerful shots.

His stunning off-drive off Nishant Sindhu was particularly impressive.

The confidence displayed by both left-handers helped South Zone recover from the early dismissals of Narayan Jagadeesan (43) and Ricky Bhui (42), who had contributed 64 runs for the opening wicket along with Shaik Rashseed.

Jagadeesan, who was dropped on 14 by wicketkeeper Kanaiah Wadhawan off Brar, had a few intense exchanges with the fast bowler.

Ultimately, Tilak, who batted throughout the four days of the match, fittingly sealed the victory by hitting a boundary through the covers off part-time leg-spinner Qamran Iqbal.

Meanwhile, North Zone had their moments as they resumed their second innings at 256 for seven, holding a lead of 139 runs.

Anshul Kamboj's quickfire 36 off 29 balls helped extend their lead to over 180.

The chase became increasingly challenging on a deteriorating pitch after South lost three early wickets, but North's poor fielding also contributed to South's escape.

Ultimately, Tilak and Smaran emerged as the key players to guide South Zone to victory.
