Harare [Zimbabwe], July 21: Indian cricketer Tilak Varma has clarified his batting strategy during India's recent tours of Ireland and England, emphasizing that his strike rate was influenced by the match context rather than personal choice.
He highlighted that his main focus is always on the team's requirements, whether that entails aggressive batting from the outset or stabilizing the innings.
Given that India often lost four or five wickets within the first 10 overs during these tours, Varma pointed out that playing recklessly was not a viable option.
Varma expressed his willingness to take on the responsibilities assigned by the team management and adjust his batting style to align with the team's strategies.
Despite scoring some runs, the 23-year-old faced criticism for not adapting swiftly enough to the evolving match situations, which some felt hindered the team's momentum.
“In this sport, you need to adapt your batting to various situations, especially in challenging conditions. I always prioritize what the team needs. If grinding out runs is necessary, I will do that. Conversely, if aggressive batting is required from the first ball, I can do that too. Throughout our tours from Ireland to England, we frequently lost four to five wickets early on,” Tilak remarked during a pre-match press conference.
“Going out and getting dismissed while trying to accelerate doesn’t make sense. I keep in mind that while I can hit from the first ball, I am representing my country, which comes with significant responsibilities. The team's conditions dictate my approach. If I need to bat through the innings, I will adapt accordingly. As vice-captain, I understand the responsibilities that come with this role, and I aim to fulfill the expectations set by the management,” he added.
During the tours, Varma scored two fifties—one against Pakistan and another against England. In the seven T20 matches he participated in, he accumulated 178 runs, with his highest score being 55 in the second T20I against Ireland in Belfast.
Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, India faced a 2-0 defeat in the T20I series against Ireland and a 4-0 loss to England. The team is now preparing to rebound as they take on Zimbabwe in a three-match T20I series starting July 23.
