Thierry Henry Comments on Folarin Balogun's Red Card Controversy Ahead of World Cup Clash
Henry Weighs in on Balogun's Red Card Situation
Santa Clara, USA - On July 6, former French striker Thierry Henry expressed his views regarding the late decision involving Folarin Balogun, a forward for the United States, which he believes could disrupt Belgium's game strategy ahead of their Round of 16 match in the FIFA World Cup 2026. In a video shared by FOX Sports on X, Henry stated that he felt Balogun did not deserve the red card he received.
FIFA had earlier announced that Balogun's automatic one-match suspension would be put on hold under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
According to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, "The implementation of the automatic match suspension for USA player Folarin Balogun is suspended for a probationary period of one (1) year."
Henry remarked that this unexpected development would require Belgium to adjust their tactical plans at short notice. He noted, "This must have affected their morale slightly because teams prepare to play in a specific manner, and then they have to alter their game plan suddenly."
He reiterated his belief that Balogun's challenge did not warrant a red card, stating, "I do not think it was a red card; we all agree it was not intentional."
Despite agreeing with the final decision, Henry acknowledged the difficulties it posed for Belgium's preparations, saying, "If you're Belgium, this changes everything for your game strategy."
He added, "While this situation may have occurred in past World Cups, it raises questions about the timing of such decisions."
Balogun had received a red card during the 64th minute of the USA's 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. Even with ten players, the co-hosts advanced to the last 16, with Balogun contributing three goals in the tournament.
The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) has voiced strong objections to FIFA's ruling that allows Balogun to play in the upcoming match against Belgium, calling the decision surprising and stating they are exploring all options to safeguard their interests.
In an official statement, the RBFA expressed their astonishment at FIFA's decision, questioning its legal foundation. They noted that while FIFA cited Article 27 of the Disciplinary Code, other regulations clearly state that a red card results in an automatic suspension for the next match, as has been the case throughout this World Cup.
Balogun is now anticipated to participate in the match against Belgium in Seattle, where a spot in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals is on the line.
