Temba Bavuma Prepares South Africa for ODI Series Against Australia Ahead of World Cup

Durban [South Africa], September 24: As South Africa gears up for their first ODI against Australia, captain Temba Bavuma expresses the team's eagerness to improve their ODI performance with the 2027 World Cup on the horizon.

The three-match ODI series kicks off on Thursday in Durban, featuring several familiar players including Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, David Miller, Corbin Bosch, Quinton de Kock, and Bavuma himself.

For Bavuma, who last played an ODI in December 2025, this series marks a significant return as South Africa prepares to host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup next year.

"We have a strong desire to enhance our ODI record and ensure we perform at our best," Bavuma stated to reporters, as noted by a sports media outlet.

He added, "Personally, it has been a long break for me. I am looking forward to being back on the field, running around, and playing with the team."

Upcoming Challenges and Team Dynamics

The squad for this series has seen several changes since South Africa's last ODI series against Namibia.

Bavuma believes that the upcoming nine ODIs against Australia, Bangladesh, and England over the next four months will be crucial in assessing the team's readiness for the World Cup.

"Mentally preparing for a home World Cup is an ongoing process that we will continue to navigate," he explained.

He emphasized that the core players are well-known, and while there may be new faces, the team will likely remain consistent as they approach the World Cup.

"We will conclude this cycle with England, and after that series, we will have a clearer picture of our World Cup squad," Bavuma added.

Top Order Composition and Future Matches

An interesting aspect of the current lineup is the configuration of South Africa's top order. Bavuma, who has played both as an opener and at number three, acknowledged that while he will be in the top order, his exact position is still to be determined.

Tony de Zorzi, who has also batted in both roles, adds to the options available for the series.

"I will likely bat in the top three. We will decide who partners Quinton (de Kock) at the top," Bavuma mentioned.

While the focus is on the upcoming ODIs, Bavuma noted the excitement surrounding the three Tests that follow as part of the ICC World Test Championship.

This series will be the first encounter between South Africa and Australia since their ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord’s in 2025, where South Africa achieved a historic victory.

Looking Ahead

"It's hard not to think about the Test series, even while focusing on the ODIs," Bavuma remarked.

He expressed anticipation for the matches, stating that both teams will be at full strength, promising an exciting contest.

"Right now, it’s about managing those emotions and we will address the Test series when the time comes," he concluded.

The first ODI between South Africa and Australia is set for September 24 in Durban.

The Test series will commence on October 9, also in Durban.
