A remarkable event took place in Lagos as a young cricket talent made her mark on the international scene. Fanny Utagushimaninde from Rwanda achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first woman to score a century on her T20I debut during the Nigeria Invitational Women’s T20I Tournament against Ghana on March 20. At the tender age of 15 years and 223 days, she also became the youngest player to hit a hundred in T20 Internationals, surpassing the previous record held by Uganda’s Prosscovia Alako, who scored 116 at 16 years and 233 days. In men's cricket, the record is held by France’s Gustav McKeon, who reached the feat at 18 years and 280 days.


Utagushimaninde opened the batting with exceptional poise, finishing her innings unbeaten at 111 runs off just 65 balls. Her performance included 17 boundaries, showcasing a mix of timing, confidence, and maturity that belies her age. She surpassed the previous highest score for a woman on T20I debut, which was 96 not out by Australia’s Karen Rolton.


Her outstanding innings propelled Rwanda to a strong total of 210 for three, putting Ghana under significant pressure. The Rwandan bowlers then delivered a disciplined performance, limiting Ghana to 88 for eight. Ultimately, Rwanda secured a commanding 122-run victory, demonstrating their dominance in all aspects of the game.
