Excitement Builds for the Tata Mumbai Marathon

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], January 17: The Tata Mumbai Marathon (TMM), recognized as a World Athletics Gold Label Race, is gearing up for an impressive turnout of over 69,000 participants. This includes more than 65,400 runners on-site and around 3,700 virtual competitors, all set to hit the streets of Mumbai on January 18, vying for a total prize pool of USD 389,524.


Organized by Procam International, this year's 21st edition introduces a significant change to the marathon route, incorporating the iconic coastal road for the first time. Runners will enjoy breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea and the Mumbai skyline as they traverse the renowned Bandra-Worli Sea Link, as stated in a recent announcement.


The Mumbai Marathon serves as a platform for both Indian and international athletes, embodying a spirit of community and fitness. Throughout its history, the event has established Mumbai as a key player on the global running stage, motivating countless individuals to adopt a healthier lifestyle.


This year's event will see participation from 14,059 runners in the Marathon, 16,369 in the Half Marathon, 8,729 in the Open 10K, 2,219 in Senior Citizens runs, 1,140 in Champions with Disability, and 27,453 in the Dream Run, encompassing both on-ground and virtual formats. The growth in participation, particularly among women and timed runners, highlights the increasing popularity of running across various demographics.


Race day will be supported by a robust team of over 3,700 police officers, more than 900 security personnel, and 7,250 volunteers, including over 250 Mumbai Dabbawalas and 260 NCC cadets.


In the men's International Elite Race, Eritrea's Merhawi Kesete, last year's runner-up, is a top contender, joined by 2023 World Champion Victor Kiplangat from Uganda, South Africa's Stephen Mokoka, and several other elite runners, promising an exciting competition.


Among the Men's Elite Indian competitors, Anish Thapa, fresh off his victory at the 2025 Hyderabad Marathon, is a strong favorite with a personal best of 2:16:41 from Delhi 2022. He will face tough competition from 2025 Mumbai runner-up Man Singh, two-time Mumbai champion Srinu Bugatha, and the rising star Pradeep Singh Chaudhary.


In the Women's International Elite category, Ethiopia's Medina Deme Armino aims for a better finish after last year's third place, competing against her fellow countrywomen. The fastest entrant, Shure Demise, along with Zinah Senbeta and Yeshi Chekole, will add to the fierce competition.


For the Women's Elite Indian field, Nirmaben Thakor is on the hunt for a historic third consecutive title, facing strong challengers like two-time winner Jyoti Gawate and past champion Lalita Babbar, among others.


As part of the marathon's tradition, Procam International hosted a 'Pasta CookOut' event featuring a live cooking demonstration with dignitaries and partners. Hirofumi Oshima from ASICS Corporation and Tushar Malhotra from Bisleri International Pvt. Ltd. emerged as winners of the cookout.


The Amateur Marathon will kick off at 5:00 am from CST on January 18, followed by the Half Marathon and Police Cup at 5:00 am from Mahim Reti Bunder Ground, and the Elite Full Marathon at 7:00 am. The schedule continues with the Champions with Disability at 7:05 am, Senior Citizens' Run at 7:25 am, and the Dream Run at 8:15 am.


To ensure smooth travel for participants, Western Railway will operate three special trains from Virar to Churchgate, Borivali to Churchgate, and Churchgate to Bandra, starting as early as 2:15 am. Central Railway will also run services from Kalyan to Churchgate, and Harbour Line from Panvel to CSMT, beginning at 2:25 am.
