Historic Achievement for Bangladesh's Tanzid Hasan Tamim

In a remarkable feat, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, the opener for Bangladesh, made history on August 14 by becoming the first Bangladeshi cricketer to score a Test century on Australian soil. This milestone was achieved during the second day of the inaugural Test match in a two-match series against Australia, held at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin.

Tanzid reached his first Test century in 188 balls, marking this achievement during Bangladesh's first innings after Australia had been dismissed for 198 on the first day.

This century also marked the end of a lengthy wait for a Bangladeshi player to score a Test hundred outside their home ground, the last being Mahmudul Hasan Joy's 137 against South Africa in 2022.

Tanzid's achievement is only the second Test century by a Bangladeshi against Australia, following Shahriar Nafees's 138 runs at Fatullah in 2006.

The 25-year-old was eventually dismissed for 101 runs off 197 balls, hitting eight fours and a six, which significantly contributed to Bangladesh's lead over Australia. At one point, Bangladesh was at 238/3 after 67 overs, holding a 40-run advantage.

On the first day, Bangladesh's Hasan Mahmud excelled with the ball, taking a career-best 6/55, which played a crucial role in bowling out Australia for 198 in just 53 overs.

Hasan's performance surpassed the previous best figures by a Bangladeshi bowler against Australia, which was 5/62 by Rafique in 2006, and marked Australia's lowest Test score against Bangladesh since 217 in Mirpur back in 2017.

In his 15 Test matches, Hasan has achieved three five-wicket hauls, making him the second-most successful Bangladeshi pacer in this regard, trailing only Shahadat Hossain, who has four in 38 Tests. Hasan has proven himself as a formidable bowler in away conditions, having taken five-wicket hauls in India, Pakistan, and now Australia.

Australia struggled to maintain momentum after a 45-run opening partnership between Travis Head (22) and Jake Weatherald (23), collapsing to 74/4. Steve Smith, who scored 71 runs off 109 balls, attempted to stabilize the innings, but Hasan's relentless bowling proved too much.

Taskin Ahmed also made history by becoming the sixth Bangladeshi bowler to reach 300 international wickets, finishing with figures of 2/55. He now has 300 wickets in 204 matches, including 13 four-wicket hauls and three five-fors, with an average exceeding 28. He joins the ranks of Shakib al Hasan (712), Mashrafe Mortaza (389), Mustafizur Rahman (384), Mehidy Hasan Miraz (369), and Taijul Islam (302) in Bangladesh's all-time bowling statistics.
