Taipei, Aug 1: Tanvi Sharma has showcased her exceptional talent at the Taipei Open 2026, securing a place in the women's singles final with a decisive victory in straight games, thus keeping India's hopes for the title alive at this BWF Super 300 event.
Competing at the Taipei Arena on Saturday, the world number 34 triumphed over the fifth seed and local favorite Huang Yu-hsun with scores of 21-17, 21-11, finishing the match in a swift 33 minutes. She will face Nguyen Thuy Linh from Vietnam in the final on Sunday.
Unlike her previous quarterfinal match against Thailand's fourth seed Supanida Katethong, where she had to rally back from a challenging position to win in three games, Tanvi dominated the semifinal, preventing any chance of a comeback from her opponent and delivering a confident performance throughout.
This latest achievement marks a significant milestone in the young athlete's rapid rise over the past two years. As a member of India's gold-medal-winning team at the 2024 Badminton Asia Team Championships, Tanvi has steadily gained recognition on the international stage. In 2025, she finished as a runner-up at both the Odisha Masters Super 100 and the Guwahati Masters Super 100, and previously won the Bonn International in 2024 and the Denmark Challenge in 2025.
India was on the verge of an all-Indian final in the women's singles, but Unnati Hooda's semifinal exit dashed those hopes. The teenager lost to sixth seed Nguyen Thuy Linh with scores of 15-21, 18-21, which means Nguyen will now compete against Tanvi for the championship. Unnati's defeat ended the possibility of an all-Indian final that had seemed likely after both players reached the semifinals.
The men's singles campaign ended on a disappointing note, with Kiran George—the last remaining Indian player after HS Prannoy's round of 16 exit—losing 21-12, 21-10 to Japan's fourth seed Yudai Okimoto in the quarter-finals.
India's struggles in the doubles events had already concluded earlier in the week, as Bhargav Ram Arigela and Viswa Tej Gobburu were eliminated in the first round of the men's doubles competition.
