New Delhi, Nov 6: In a remarkable feat, Tanvi Patri has become the first Indian woman to secure a silver medal in women's singles badminton at the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics. She achieved this milestone after a thrilling final against the reigning World Junior Champion, Zhang Yi Xin, in Dakar, Senegal, on Thursday.

During the intense match, Tanvi saved six match points and had three opportunities to win herself, ultimately losing 15-21, 21-13, 26-24 after an hour and 22 minutes of gripping action.

Earlier in the tournament, she made history by being the first Indian female athlete to reach the badminton finals at the Youth Olympics.

Prior to Tanvi's achievement, HS Prannoy (2010) and Lakshya Sen (2018) were the only Indians to have won individual silver medals in the Youth Olympic Games. Sen also claimed a mixed team gold with Team Alpha, which featured players from eight different nations.

In the gold medal match, Tanvi initially struggled but quickly gained momentum, scoring seven consecutive points to lead 10-5 in the first game, which she won in 25 minutes.

She started the second game strong with a 4-0 lead, but the drift from behind began to affect her shots, allowing Zhang to take control and push the match to a deciding game.

In the final game, Zhang surged ahead with her signature cross-court drops, establishing a 19-10 lead. Although Tanvi narrowed the gap to 19-15, she ultimately faced five match points against her. Despite saving them and having three chances to clinch the gold, Zhang's experience proved decisive.

Expressing pride in Tanvi's journey, the General Secretary of the Badminton Association of India stated, “Tanvi Patri has made the entire nation proud with a historic achievement at the Youth Olympic Games. Winning a silver medal at just 15 is an extraordinary accomplishment and a moment of immense pride for India.

“Her fighting spirit, composure, and performances throughout the competition reflect the immense potential of our young sporting generation. This achievement is a significant milestone for Indian sport and a testament to the growing presence of our athletes on the global stage. On behalf of the Badminton Association of India and its member colleagues, I congratulate Tanvi and everyone who has supported her journey,” he added.
