Tanvi Patri Makes History with Silver Medal at Youth Olympics
Historic Achievement for Indian Badminton
Dakar [Senegal], November 6: In a remarkable feat, Tanvi Patri has become the first Indian female badminton player to secure a silver medal in women's singles at the Youth Olympics. She faced reigning world junior champion Zhang Yi Xin in a thrilling final held in Dakar, Senegal, on Thursday.
The 15-year-old athlete showcased her resilience by saving six match points, although she ultimately fell short, losing the match with scores of 15-21, 21-13, 26-24 after an intense hour and 22 minutes of play that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.
Prior to Tanvi's achievement, HS Prannoy (2010) and Lakshya Sen (2018) were the only Indians to have won individual silver medals at the Youth Olympic Games. Notably, Sen also contributed to Team Alpha's mixed team gold, which featured players from eight different nations.
Expressing pride in Tanvi's accomplishment, the General Secretary of the Badminton Association of India remarked, “Tanvi Patri has made the entire nation proud with her historic achievement at the Youth Olympic Games. Winning a silver medal at just 15 is an extraordinary accomplishment and a moment of immense pride for India. Her fighting spirit, composure, and performances throughout the competition reflect the immense potential of our young sporting generation. This achievement is a significant milestone for Indian sport and a testament to the growing presence of our athletes on the global stage. On behalf of the Badminton Association of India and its member colleagues, I congratulate Tanvi and everyone who has supported her journey.”
During the gold medal match, Tanvi initially struggled but quickly found her rhythm, scoring seven consecutive points to lead 10-5 after trailing 3-5. Her tactical play and net control allowed her to clinch the first game in 25 minutes.
In the second game, she surged to a 4-0 lead, but the drift from behind began to affect her performance, allowing Zhang to take charge and push the match into a deciding game.
In the final game, Zhang established an early lead of 19-10 with her signature cross-court drops. Although Tanvi managed to narrow the gap to 19-15, a mistake on a cross-court smash led to Zhang earning five match points. Despite saving those, Tanvi couldn't convert her own three opportunities to claim the gold, with Zhang's experience ultimately proving decisive.
