Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], March 27: The Tamil Nadu Surfing Association (TNSA) has been awarded the esteemed Chief Minister's State Sports Award for 2025-2026 in the Best Sports Organizer category. This accolade, presented by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, acknowledges TNSA's significant role in organizing national and international surfing competitions and promoting the sport throughout the state.
The award underscores TNSA's unwavering commitment to fostering a vibrant surfing community in Tamil Nadu. Arun Vasu, the President of the Surfing Federation of India (SFI), accepted the award on behalf of TNSA, as stated in a press release.
In recent years, Tamil Nadu has emerged as India's surfing capital, becoming a leading destination for surfing and stand-up paddling. With renowned surf spots like Covelong (Kovalam) and Mahabalipuram, the state has successfully hosted prestigious events, including the Asian Surfing Championships and numerous national surfing and SUP competitions.
The growth of surfing in Tamil Nadu has received strong backing from Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. Under the leadership of SDAT Member Secretary Meghnath Reddy, improved infrastructure and ongoing support have allowed TNSA to organize world-class events and nurture emerging talent.
These competitions have not only enhanced India's visibility in the global surfing arena but have also been crucial in developing local talent, with several Tamil Nadu surfers achieving success in international contests. The Tamil Nadu government's steadfast support, combined with the dedicated efforts of TNSA and the Surfing Federation of India, has facilitated the sport's growth at both grassroots and elite levels.
TNSA has played a pivotal role in planning, organizing, and executing large-scale surfing events in the state, ensuring high standards in competition management, athlete involvement, and international exposure. Their initiatives have established a sustainable pathway for athletes while promoting sports tourism and community engagement along the coast.
In response to the award, Arun Vasu remarked, “This recognition reflects the collective dedication of everyone involved in advancing surfing in Tamil Nadu, from athletes and coaches to government officials and local communities. Our relentless efforts to position India on the global surfing map are now being acknowledged at the highest level.”
He further stated, “Tamil Nadu benefits from excellent waves, but it is the ecosystem we have developed around the sport that has made a real difference. Our commitment to hosting international events and nurturing grassroots talent has always aimed at creating a lasting impact. This recognition inspires us to continue striving for excellence and elevating Indian surfing.”
With a solid foundation established, Tamil Nadu is poised to continue leading Indian surfing, setting new standards in event organization, athlete development, and global competitiveness.
