Celebrating Sporting Excellence in Tamil Nadu

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], October 9: Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay inaugurated the 'Dream Olympics' initiative, honoring athletes from Tamil Nadu who excelled at the 20th Asian Games 2026 and the 46th Chess Olympiad 2026.

The special ceremony took place at The Leela Palace in Chennai, organized by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT). During the event, Vijay recognized the athletes for their outstanding achievements and awarded them cheques as cash incentives.

Wicketkeeper-batter G Kamalini, who secured a gold medal with the Indian women's cricket team at the 2026 Asian Games, expressed her gratitude for Vijay's supportive remarks during the event.

“CM Vijay said, ‘We are there for you.’ That simple statement meant a lot to me. It’s a proud moment for my family and me,” Kamalini shared on Thursday.

Chess Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, who contributed to the Indian team’s silver medal at the Chess Olympiad, also expressed appreciation for the Tamil Nadu government's backing of athletes.

“Winning the silver medal was fantastic, and meeting the CM to receive our cash award was a highlight. The support from the Tamil Nadu government through SDAT has been invaluable,” Praggnanandhaa noted.

The event gathered Tamil Nadu athletes who have made significant strides in various sports, with the state government acknowledging their efforts and providing financial assistance through cash rewards.

The launch of the 'Dream Olympics' initiative aims to nurture and promote sporting talent across Tamil Nadu.

Ace athlete Vithya Ramraj expressed her joy, stating, “I’m thrilled to have won three medals, which I plan to frame. Meeting CM Vijay was a dream come true, especially after breaking a 42-year-old national record. I’m grateful for the government’s incredible support.”

Rower Satnam Singh highlighted India's historic bronze medal in the men's Double Sculls at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, marking a significant milestone for the sport in India. This was the first medal for India in this event since the Asian Games began in 1951.

Teaming up with Salman Khan, Satnam achieved a time of 6:13.25 at the Nagaragawa International Regatta Course. This marks his second medal at the Asian Games, having previously won bronze in the Quadruple Sculls event in Hangzhou.

“New opportunities have emerged for us in this event, and I believe we can achieve even greater success in the future,” Satnam remarked to SAI Media on Thursday.

“Experience plays a crucial role. Initially, there’s pressure in competition, but as you gain experience, your confidence builds, and the fear diminishes, which is vital for any athlete,” he added.
