Toor's Silver Medal Journey

Tajinderpal Singh Toor's quest for a third consecutive gold medal at the Asian Games concluded with a silver medal as he faced challenging wet conditions on Saturday.

Toor achieved a top throw of 20.64 meters, earning him the second position and marking his third consecutive medal at the Asian Games.

The gold medal was claimed by Iran's Mohammadreza Tayebise, who set a new Games record with a throw of 20.81 meters, surpassing Toor's previous record of 20.75 meters established in 2018. Saudi Arabia's Mohammed Tolu secured the bronze with a throw of 20.48 meters.

While Toor's silver adds to his gold medals from Jakarta in 2018 and Hangzhou in 2022, it also meant that his Games record was broken by Tayebise.

Toor expressed his initial confidence in achieving a personal best and reaching the 21-meter mark, but he felt disappointed with the outcome.

He stated, 'I was aiming for a hat-trick of gold medals. My body felt good, and I was confident I could throw my best until the sixth attempt. So, I am a bit disappointed and not satisfied with my performance.'

The athlete acknowledged the support from the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), which had encouraged him to aim for gold, but he remained content with securing a medal.

'AFI instilled confidence in me, urging me to give my best, and while I couldn't secure gold, a medal is still a medal,' Toor remarked, noting his personal best of 21.77 meters achieved in 2023.

At 31, Toor also shared that he had been managing minor injuries leading up to the Games.

'For the past three months, I dealt with minor injuries. The rain made it challenging to maintain a proper grip, and there was always the concern of slipping during the turn,' he explained.

When asked about his motivation, Toor emphasized the importance of self-motivation, stating, 'No one can motivate you. You have to motivate yourself and pick yourself up.'
