Switzerland's Injury Woes Ahead of Quarterfinal

Missouri [US], July 11: Switzerland will be missing Johan Manzambi for their crucial FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal match against Argentina, as confirmed by head coach Murat Yakin on Friday. The young midfielder has not recovered from his injury in time for the game.

Yakin expressed disappointment, stating that the team had made every effort to ensure Manzambi could participate, but ultimately, he remains sidelined. “We did everything possible to bring him back, but unfortunately, he cannot play tomorrow,” Yakin remarked.

The coach emphasized the impact of Manzambi's absence, noting that it is a significant loss for both the player and the team, especially given his contributions throughout the tournament. “Johan is in considerable pain. It was a shock for all of us. He had great momentum, and his joy for the game is infectious,” he added.

Switzerland's captain, Granit Xhaka, dismissed suggestions that the team was overly focused on Lionel Messi, the Argentine superstar. He stressed that their main objective is to secure a victory against the defending champions.

These comments followed remarks from former German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, who claimed that Swiss players were showing “too much respect” for Messi and were more interested in obtaining his shirt than winning the match.

“We cannot control what others say about us,” Xhaka stated to reporters. “Our focus is on performing well and demonstrating our capabilities on the field. That’s what truly matters.”

He further added, “We have various strategies, and we aim to find the best one. Tomorrow, we will play as a cohesive unit, executing good passes and applying pressure against the reigning champions.”

Xhaka, 33, described the upcoming match against Argentina as a pivotal moment in his career. “This will undoubtedly be a highlight for me,” he said. “Every opportunity to achieve something extraordinary feels unique.”

“After 72 years, being here with Switzerland and facing the reigning champions fills me with pride. However, I’m not here to just talk; I want to take the next steps. We are very close to the finish line, and I am eager to show how much we desire this on the pitch,” he concluded.
