Switzerland Celebrates Historic FIFA World Cup Victory Over Algeria
Switzerland's Landmark Win in FIFA World Cup 2026
Vancouver [Canada], July 3: Dan Ndoye, a forward for Switzerland, expressed the team's joy following their significant victory against Algeria in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026, stating they are eager for further success.
According to FIFA records, Switzerland's last knockout stage win in the World Cup occurred in 1954 when they hosted the tournament and advanced from the group stage after a playoff against Italy.
However, their recent 2-0 triumph over Algeria in Vancouver, featuring goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye, has ended that lengthy wait and rewritten history.
Ndoye acknowledged the importance of their win but emphasized the team's focus on future challenges, saying, 'We know that what we did today is special but we want more. We are happy today and tomorrow we will think about the next step and the next game, the next opponent.'
He described the victory as a historic moment for Switzerland, highlighting that both the team and the nation have long aspired to such success and aim to build on it for future achievements.
'It feels great, really great. It was really important for us to win today. We wrote one page of history for our nation and we hope we will continue like that because this is what we have dreamt about. Not just the players, but the country has been dreaming about this and we want to continue to make them dream,' he added.
In the match against Algeria, Breel Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute, finishing a brilliant play initiated by Johan Manzambi. The winger executed a solo run down the left side, reaching the byline and delivering a precise cross that Embolo converted from close range.
With a 1-0 lead at halftime, Switzerland quickly extended their advantage when Dan Ndoye scored in the 46th minute. The goal resulted from a defensive clearance that fell to him outside the box, allowing him to strike a low shot into the net.
Algeria, under the leadership of Riyad Mahrez, attempted to rally but struggled to penetrate the organized Swiss defense. Switzerland nearly added a third goal late in the game, but Fabian Rieder squandered a clear opportunity.
Despite this missed chance, Switzerland comfortably secured the 2-0 victory, advancing to the Round of 16.
Switzerland will remain in Vancouver, preparing to face either Colombia or Ghana on July 7.
