Vancouver [Switzerland], July 3: Switzerland has successfully advanced to the Round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a decisive 2-0 victory against Algeria on Thursday (local time), showcasing a dominant performance in the knockout stage.
Breel Embolo earned the Player of the Match title for his outstanding display.
Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute, finishing a well-coordinated play initiated by Johan Manzambi. The winger executed a stunning solo run down the left side, reaching the byline before delivering a precise cross that Embolo converted from close range.
With a 1-0 lead at halftime, Switzerland quickly extended their advantage right after the break when Dan Ndoye scored in the 46th minute. The goal resulted from a defensive clearance that fell perfectly for him outside the penalty area, allowing him to strike a low shot into the net.
Algeria, under the leadership of Riyad Mahrez, tried to stage a comeback but struggled to penetrate the organized Swiss defense. Switzerland nearly added a third goal late in the match, but Fabian Rieder squandered a clear opportunity.

Switzerland will remain in Vancouver for their next match against either Colombia or Ghana on July 7. According to the FIFA website, this victory marks Switzerland's third consecutive win in World Cup history, following their group-stage victories over Bosnia and Herzegovina and Canada.
