Sweden's Coach Acknowledges France's Dominance After World Cup Defeat
Sweden's Challenge Against France
New York [US], July 1: Graham Potter, the head coach of Sweden, admitted that his team required an almost flawless performance to stand a chance against France. He noted that even their best efforts might not have sufficed against the formidable French squad.
France secured a convincing 3-0 win over Sweden at MetLife Stadium, thanks to a brilliant double from their star captain Kylian Mbappe, which ensured their progression to the Round of 16 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In his post-match comments, Potter candidly discussed the disparity in experience and skill between the two teams, commending France's elite quality while recognizing Sweden's position as a developing team.
“We needed to be perfect, and even then, I’m not sure it would have been enough, to be honest, because the opponent was at an exceptional level,” Potter stated.
He further elaborated, “When you compare the careers and achievements of the French players to ours, it’s clear we are a young team still in development, with promising prospects ahead.”
Despite the loss, Potter expressed a realistic yet hopeful perspective on his team's future. He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football while giving high praise to the tournament favorites.
“In football, anything can happen,” Potter remarked. “However, I personally haven’t seen a team better than France.”
As Sweden exits the tournament after a commendable effort, France confidently advances to the next stage, where they will face Paraguay on July 4.
