Suryansh Shedge's India Call-Up: A Chance for Growth and Learning
A Unique Opportunity for Suryansh Shedge
Suryansh Shedge's unexpected selection for the Indian cricket team is a 'fortunate break' that he can transform into a valuable learning experience, according to his mentor and former national selector, Jatin Paranjape. He emphasizes the importance of being observant in a seasoned dressing room, particularly with the guidance of young captains like Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill.
Paranjape, who has been mentoring the Mumbai all-rounder for the past year and a half, believes that Iyer's leadership in T20 formats will provide reassurance to the 23-year-old Shedge, especially since they have previously collaborated successfully in Mumbai and with the Punjab Kings.
He remarked, 'Both Shreyas and Shubman are empathetic young leaders who understand the pressures that come with debuting in international cricket.' With the absence of Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy from the UK tour, Paranjape feels that Gill's support will be invaluable for Shedge.
For the upcoming series, which kicks off with two T20 matches against Ireland on June 26, Paranjape advises Shedge to absorb as much knowledge as he can from the experienced players around him.
He stated, 'My advice is to be a sponge and soak up everything from the champions in that dressing room. If he can adapt to that environment, England will be a fantastic place for him.'
Paranjape highlighted that this opportunity is a result of Shedge's hard work and should be approached with humility. 'He recognizes this as a lucky break and is committed to giving his best for the team. The key is to always think like a team player and aim to contribute to victories,' he added.
Paranjape first encountered Shedge through a mutual acquaintance and quickly identified him as a player that Indian cricket needs. 'I've been working with him for about a year and a half, and he has demonstrated significant talent, especially in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.'
He expressed enthusiasm for Shedge's potential as an all-rounder, noting the current demand for versatile players in Indian cricket. 'We are in search of fast-bowling all-rounders and batsmen who can bowl medium pace, as well as spin all-rounders,' he explained.
Paranjape observed that Shedge's development accelerated once he addressed the common technical challenges faced by young cricketers. 'When we first met, there were a few obstacles hindering his progress, which are typical for aspiring top-level cricketers.'
He added, 'I have always believed in his abilities as a cricketer. One of the reasons I am confident in his future is my belief that he can evolve into a genuine all-format player.'
A crucial aspect of Shedge's growth has been enhancing his bowling skills. Paranjape revealed that former national selector and renowned bowling coach Subroto Banerjee has been closely working with Shedge on his bowling technique.
While Shedge's batting currently outshines his bowling, Paranjape notes that the gap is closing quickly. 'Subroto and I are focusing on a few technical adjustments in his bowling. Once these improvements take hold in the coming months, he will be able to establish himself as either a batter or a bowler, truly becoming an all-rounder.'
