Suryakumar Yadav's Continued Struggles

As the selection meeting for the Indian squad for the upcoming series against Ireland and England approaches, Suryakumar Yadav's performance has raised concerns. In the opening match of the Triumph Knights' tournament on June 2 at the renowned Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the Indian T20I captain's batting woes continued. Coming in at number four while chasing a daunting target of 210, he managed to score only 19 runs off 11 balls before being dismissed by Rahul Sawant. Yadav attempted a slog sweep but was caught by Vaibhav Mali at short leg.

Speculation has been rife regarding Suryakumar's future as the captain of the Indian T20I team, especially after leading the squad to victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup. However, his form has been concerning since the beginning of 2025, further exacerbated by a disappointing IPL season where he scored just 270 runs in three matches, averaging 20.76 with a strike rate of 147.54. Following his early exit, the Triumph Knights lost the match by 21 runs, despite Nutan Goel's impressive 93 runs off 56 balls.

Poor Outing For Shreyas Iyer

Another player looking to secure a spot in the Indian T20I team is Shreyas Iyer, the vice-captain of the ODI squad. Unfortunately, he too had a disappointing performance in the opening game for SOBO Mumbai Falcons against ARCS Andheri at Wankhede. Iyer, who captains the Falcons, was dismissed for a mere five runs after facing seven balls, caught by wicketkeeper Prasad Pawar off a delivery from Andheri's skipper Shivam Dube. Dube, a two-time T20 World Cup champion, delivered an outstanding bowling performance, taking 3 wickets for just 17 runs in 3.2 overs, leading to the South Mumbai team being bowled out for 126. Despite Iyer's struggles, Dube's team successfully chased the target with six overs remaining, earning him the Player of the Match award.
