Suryakumar Yadav Set for IPL 2026 Comeback with Mumbai Indians
Suryakumar Yadav's Anticipated Return
Suryakumar Yadav is gearing up to make his return to the field with the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the upcoming IPL 2026 season. The captain of India's T20I team is currently enjoying a well-deserved break after leading his squad to victory in the 2026 World Cup, where they triumphed over New Zealand in a decisive final, marking India's third title win in this prestigious tournament.
Having made a significant mark in the T20 World Cup, Suryakumar is on the verge of achieving another milestone in IPL 2026. He is poised to become only the second player, following Rohit Sharma, to reach this achievement for the Mumbai Indians. With a total of 3703 runs across 112 matches, Suryakumar ranks as the second-highest run-scorer for MI, just 298 runs shy of the 4000-run milestone in IPL history.
| Batsmen with most runs for Mumbai Indians | Runs scored |
| Rohit Sharma | 5876 |
| Suryakumar Yadav | 3703 |
| Kieron Pollard | 3412 |
| Ambati Rayudu | 2416 |
| Sachin Tendulkar | 2334 |
Currently, Rohit Sharma stands as the only player to have crossed the 4000-run mark, amassing 5876 runs in 227 matches. Rohit, who has captained MI to five IPL titles, has been with the franchise since the mega-auction in 2011. Following him is Kieron Pollard, who has scored 3412 runs before retiring from the T20 league ahead of IPL 2023 and now serves on MI's coaching staff.
Suryakumar Yadav's Journey with Mumbai Indians
Suryakumar made his IPL debut with MI in 2012, although he only participated in one match that season. He later joined the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) under Gautam Gambhir's leadership, where he played until 2017, primarily as a finisher but struggled to surpass the 200-run mark in any season. He returned to MI during the IPL 2018 mega-auction and has remained with the team ever since.
His standout performance in IPL 2020, where he scored 480 runs to help MI clinch the title, paved the way for his national call-up, leading to his T20I debut against England in March 2021. Despite his role as India's T20I captain, Suryakumar will not be leading MI, as Hardik Pandya has taken over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma ahead of IPL 2024.
