Suryakumar Yadav Praises Team Efforts After Thrilling Semi-Final Win Against England
Indian Skipper Reflects on Semi-Final Victory
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], March 6: After a tense victory over England in the ICC T20 World Cup semi-final, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav commended Sanju Samson for his explosive innings and Jasprit Bumrah for his impressive bowling performance. He shared insights on the pressure of defending a total of 254 runs as the team prepares for the final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad.
Samson's remarkable 89 runs and Bumrah's economical bowling of 1/33 in a match where runs flowed freely helped India secure a narrow seven-run win, despite England's Jacob Bethell scoring a formidable 105. The match saw England at one point struggling at 95/4, but they fought back valiantly. India will now face New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.
During the post-match presentation, Suryakumar expressed, “It’s an incredible feeling. Leading such a talented team in India during the World Cup is special. The boys are excited about heading to Ahmedabad for the final. Sanju knew exactly what was required when he came to bat, and his aggressive approach was crucial for us. His performance was a testament to his hard work over the past year.”
He also acknowledged England's batting prowess, mentioning a conversation with their captain, Harry Brook, about the challenges posed by their strong batting lineup. “It was a good wicket, and England batted well. They were always in contention. However, the way Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and the other bowlers managed to regain control was remarkable. Bumrah has consistently delivered for India, and he did it again today,” Suryakumar noted.
He praised fielding coach T Dilip for the team's excellent catching, highlighting Axar Patel's outstanding fielding efforts. “We must credit our fielding coach Dilip T for his work with the players. His training sessions have been engaging and competitive, and the players have responded positively, putting in extra effort for the team,” he added.
On the decision to promote all-rounder Shivam Dube to number four in the batting order, Suryakumar explained that the batting lineup is generally stable up to number three, but Dube was brought in to counter England's leg-spinner Adil Rashid. “We didn’t want to disrupt the order, but Dube was the right choice against Rashid,” he said.
Reflecting on the nerves experienced during the chase, Suryakumar admitted, “I was very nervous! If someone had checked my heart rate, it would have been through the roof. But that’s part of the game. It was a thrilling semi-final, and we’re excited to head into the final. The crowd was incredible, with the stadium nearly full during warm-ups, showing their support for us. We hope to deliver another great performance in the final, despite the pressure,” he concluded.
India batted first, with a stellar performance from Sanju Samson (89* off 42 balls, including eight fours and seven sixes) and contributions from Shivam Dube (43 off 25 balls), Ishan Kishan (39 off 18 balls), Hardik Pandya (27 off 12 balls), and Tilak Varma (21 off 7 balls), leading to a total of 253/7 in 20 overs. Despite having England at 95/4, Jacob Bethell's counter-attack (105 off 48 balls) and Will Jacks' 35 off 20 balls brought England close, but they ultimately fell short at 246/7.
