A Memorable Journey to T20 World Cup Glory

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], March 9: Suryakumar Yadav, the captain of the Indian cricket team, has reflected on the team's remarkable journey to clinch the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 title, calling it a "wonderful journey." He emphasized the teamwork that led to their success in front of a home audience in Ahmedabad.

During the post-match press conference, Suryakumar acknowledged the initial hurdles faced during the tournament but noted that the team gradually found its stride, showcasing impressive performances throughout.

Having guided India to their third T20 championship, Suryakumar is now focused on securing an Olympic gold medal in 2028.

“It has indeed been a wonderful journey over the past month. Although it didn’t begin as we had hoped, that’s part of the game. The experiences we’ve shared as a team have been incredibly special, and I’m thrilled with what we’ve accomplished. Looking ahead, our next target is the Olympics, along with the T20 World Cup that same year,” Suryakumar stated.

The Indian captain highlighted a significant shift in the team's approach following their 2024 T20 World Cup victory, adopting a more aggressive and contemporary style of play that has yielded positive results in major competitions.

“Everything changed after 2024. We embraced a different style of cricket then, which helped us understand how to progress as a team. It’s been a fantastic journey since,” he remarked.

Suryakumar noted that the team’s growth began with their success in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and continued with their commanding performance in the T20 World Cup held at home.

“We won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, playing a completely different brand of cricket. In 2026, we aimed to achieve something special in front of our home crowd. We intend to keep this momentum going into 2027, 2028, and beyond,” he added.

In the final match, after winning the toss, New Zealand opted to field first. India posted a formidable total of 255/5, thanks to impressive innings from Samson (89 runs off 46 balls), Abhishek Sharma (52 runs off 21 balls), Ishan Kishan (54 runs off 25 balls), and Shivam Dube (26* runs off 8 balls).

Despite a half-century from Tim Seifert (52 runs off 26 balls), New Zealand succumbed to the brilliance of Axar (3 wickets for 27 runs) and Bumrah (4 wickets for 15 runs), as India secured their third T20 World Cup title, becoming the first team to defend the title and the first host nation to win the trophy.
