Sunil Gavaskar Urges Rohit Sharma to Achieve More ODI Centuries
Gavaskar's Insights on Rohit Sharma's Performance
Renowned Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar recently shared his views on Rohit Sharma's impressive 92-run innings against the West Indies during the third and final ODI.
Gavaskar expressed his dissatisfaction with Sharma's dismissal at 92, emphasizing his hope that the 'Hitman' will accumulate more ODI centuries than his age by the time he retires from international cricket.
He remarked that achieving a 36th ODI century would have brought Rohit closer to that goal, reflecting on his own aspiration to have his Test centuries match his age upon retirement.
Currently, Sharma has a total of 35 centuries in ODI matches.
In the recent ODI against the West Indies, with captain Shubman Gill (1) and Virat Kohli (0) falling early, Rohit once again stepped up. Following his century in the second ODI, he delivered another stellar performance, scoring 92 runs off 85 balls, including 10 fours and three sixes.
Gavaskar stated, "My disappointment with Rohit getting out at 92 stems from the fact that he missed out on a hundred. He might consider retiring after the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, and at that time, I would love for him to have more ODI hundreds than his age," during an interview on JioStar.
He also highlighted a noticeable change in Rohit Sharma's batting style since the 2023 ODI World Cup, noting that the opener has begun to prioritize wicket preservation and converting starts into substantial scores. This adjustment allows him to maintain a quick scoring rate while also building towards centuries, which ultimately benefits India's overall scoring and mitigates criticism regarding slow batting.
