Sunil Gavaskar Proposes International Marathon in Guwahati to Boost Cricket

Gavaskar proposed hosting an International Marathon in Guwahati, inspired by the Tokyo Marathon '25. Sarma expressed enthusiasm for the idea, emphasizing the importance of Gavaskar's insights in nurturing cricket talent. A Meeting of Cricket Legends in Assam

On June 27, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar at his office in Lok Sewa Bhawan, Guwahati. The two discussed ways to enhance the cricketing landscape in Assam.


Gavaskar, renowned for his exceptional skill against some of the toughest fast bowlers in the world, suggested hosting an International Marathon in Guwahati, inspired by the Tokyo Marathon '25.


Chief Minister Sarma expressed his enthusiasm for the idea, stating that the government would thoroughly consider the proposal.


In a post shared on X, Sarma highlighted their meeting, mentioning, "Shri Sunil Gavaskar ji met me & proposed to organise an International Marathon in Guwahati on the lines of the Tokyo Marathon '25. We will be glad to host it & will definitely examine it. Like many of my generation, I also shared with him my childhood memories of those SUNNY knocks!"


The conversation also included nostalgic moments from Indian cricket, as Sarma reminisced about watching Gavaskar's legendary innings.


They discussed the evolution of cricket, covering both red-ball and white-ball formats, and strategized on how to further enhance cricket in Assam.


Sarma noted that Gavaskar's extensive experience and insights would be invaluable in guiding the government's initiatives to cultivate cricketing talent and promote the sport in the state.


The meeting was also attended by Devajit Saikia, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and KK Dwivedi, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister.


Sunil Gavaskar's illustrious career includes 125 Test matches and 108 ODIs, where he scored 10,122 Test runs at an impressive average of 51.12, including 34 centuries, and 3,092 ODI runs at an average of 35.13. He was the first batsman to reach the milestone of 10,000 runs and 34 centuries in Test cricket.
