Sunil Gavaskar Highlights CSK's Bowling Struggles in IPL 2026
CSK's Bowling Concerns in IPL 2026
Sunil Gavaskar, the iconic Indian cricketer, has expressed concerns regarding the bowling performance of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2026). In their recent match, CSK faced a five-wicket defeat against Shreyas Iyer's Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the renowned MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on April 3. Batting first, CSK managed to post a total of 209 runs for five wickets, largely due to Ayush Mhatre's impressive 73 runs, along with valuable contributions from Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube. However, their bowlers struggled to contain the PBKS batting lineup, which successfully chased down the target with five wickets to spare.
Gavaskar pointed out that CSK's underwhelming bowling attack could place extra pressure on their batsmen, suggesting that they might need to consistently score between 225 and 230 runs to remain competitive. He stated, 'Based on what we’ve observed, CSK’s primary issue for the remainder of the tournament will be their bowling. This implies they may have to regularly aim for scores around 225–230 to give their bowlers a fighting chance,' during his analysis on Star Sports’ 'Amul Cricket Live'.
Furthermore, Gavaskar emphasized the urgency for CSK to address their bowling deficiencies, noting that many teams in the league possess strong batting depth. He remarked, 'Most franchises now have considerable batting strength, as demonstrated by Punjab Kings, where Marcus Stoinis came in at No. 7 and played effectively with proper cricketing shots. With numerous teams boasting deep batting lineups, Chennai must rectify their bowling issues.' This season marks a challenging period for CSK, who finished at the bottom of the standings last year and have not started well this time, suffering an eight-wicket loss to Rajasthan Royals, who chased down a target of 128 with 47 balls to spare. Currently, CSK sits at the bottom of the table with a net run rate of -2.562, the lowest among all ten teams after their latest defeat to PBKS.
