Gavaskar's Perspective on Asian Games Preparations

Amid ongoing discussions about the facilities available for the Indian cricket team at the upcoming Asian Games in Japan, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar emphasized the importance of overcoming challenges rather than dwelling on them. The Indian squad is set to kick off their campaign on September 28 at Korogi Sports Park, a venue recognized for hosting both cricket and baseball.

Gavaskar remarked, “This isn’t a traditional cricketing nation. The conditions may not align with what we typically expect in cricket-loving countries. Consequently, the atmosphere might be different, and the audience could be smaller than what we usually see when India plays.”

He continued, “It’s challenging to comment on the pitches or practice facilities from here, as well as the accommodation arrangements. However, the essence of cricket lies in its adaptability. Players often start their journey in local clubs, playing on open grounds with minimal facilities. Embracing this challenge and emerging victorious will make the achievement even more rewarding.”

Gavaskar praised the Indian team for entering the tournament with their strongest lineup. “The batting lineup is exceptional. Players at positions six and seven can score at impressive strike rates of 140 or 150, which is exciting. Additionally, having Jasprit Bumrah in the squad is beneficial as he needs to get some match practice before the series against New Zealand. Shreyas Iyer, with his captaincy experience, performed well during the IPL, and I believe he won’t feel any added pressure in this event. Leading the country is a significant honor for any captain,” he stated.

He acknowledged the competitive nature of the tournament, saying, “This is a T20 format, and it will be tough. Bangladesh is in good form, Pakistan is always a formidable opponent, and Sri Lanka is a strong T20 team. We must also consider Afghanistan, making it a challenging competition.”

“Beyond these four teams, Nepal has shown remarkable improvement in their cricketing skills. Their performance in the T20 World Cup, where they nearly upset England and other teams, is a testament to this. Bangladesh recently triumphed over Australia at home, so we cannot afford to underestimate any team,” he concluded.
