Gavaskar's Concerns Over IPL Withdrawals

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to enforce harsher penalties for players who withdraw from the Indian Premier League (IPL) without justifiable reasons after being auctioned. Currently, the BCCI imposes a two-year suspension on players who back out at the last moment, but Gavaskar believes this measure is insufficient. His comments followed Ben Duckett's recent withdrawal from the IPL after being acquired by the Delhi Capitals for 2 crores, citing workload management as his reason.

Gavaskar remarked that Duckett's successful performance in the Ashes series and his lucrative contract at The Hundred likely influenced his decision to skip the IPL. He stated, “It’s a challenging situation. If Duckett hadn’t been bought for such a significant amount at The Hundred auction, perhaps he would have approached the IPL differently. Given his financial security, he may feel comfortable prioritizing his England Test career over the IPL.”

He further emphasized that the BCCI needs to reconsider its approach, as the existing two-year ban does not seem to deter players from withdrawing. “If the penalty does not affect the player’s future participation in the IPL, it fails to serve its purpose,” he added. Duckett's decision means he will miss two IPL seasons, joining Harry Brook, who also faces a two-year ban after opting out of IPL 2025 despite being purchased for Rs 6.25 crores.

Impact of Last-Minute Withdrawals

Players have taken advantage of the BCCI's regulations, with some withdrawing after being bought for lower amounts, citing various reasons. This practice allows certain players to enter the auction and later decide whether to participate. Although the BCCI has been lenient in the past, the introduction of a two-year ban was seen as a positive step. However, instances of last-minute withdrawals continue to occur, disrupting team dynamics and creating unfair situations, even with the option for teams to select replacements. With growing concerns, the BCCI may need to reassess its penalties to ensure they are effective.
