Steve Smith Undergoes Concussion Assessment During First Test Against South Africa
Concussion Assessment for Steve Smith
In Durban, South Africa, on October 12, Australian cricketer Steve Smith was evaluated for a concussion on the fourth day of the first Test match against South Africa after being hit on the helmet by a bouncer from Anrich Nortje.
The incident took place during the 13th over of Australia's second innings when Nortje's delivery struck Smith's helmet and deflected towards fine leg. Medical staff assessed him on the field, and after replacing his helmet, he continued to bat. Smith managed to score 27 runs off 41 balls before being dismissed by Simon Harmer.
When South Africa began their second innings, Smith did not take the field, with Michael Neser stepping in as a substitute fielder. Smith had previously showcased his fielding skills on the third day, taking impressive catches at slip off Nathan Lyon's bowling.
Cricket Australia indicated that further updates regarding Smith's condition would be provided later in the day or the following day.
Given that Smith has completed his batting responsibilities and seldom bowls, it is unlikely that Australia will require a concussion substitute for the remainder of the Test.
Throughout his career, Smith has experienced several concussions, the most notable being in 2019 at Lord's when he was struck by a bouncer from England's Jofra Archer.
Australia's tour of South Africa has been marred by injuries, with Cameron Green ruled out due to an abdominal strain and Josh Inglis sidelined with a fractured finger. This led to the inclusion of Nic Maddinson and Sam Harper, with Maddinson making his Test return after a decade, opening the innings in Durban.
Inglis, who suffered his injury during the first ODI against South Africa last month, has rejoined the Australian squad in Durban and participated in a batting session on Monday as he continues his recovery.
