Smith Dismisses Retirement Talk Before Sydney Test

Sydney [Australia], January 3: Steve Smith, who is currently leading Australia in the ongoing Ashes series, has put to rest any rumors regarding his retirement as the fifth and final Test approaches at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), commencing January 4.

Considered one of the premier red-ball batsmen in cricket history, Smith has faced a decline in his performance in recent years, at least by his own high standards.

In the years 2014 through 2017 and again in 2019, Smith boasted an impressive average exceeding 70. While he maintained an average above 50 in 2021, 2022, and 2025, he has not made the same significant impact that once characterized his career, prompting speculation about his future.

However, during a press conference prior to the Sydney Test, Smith stated that he is approaching his career "day by day, series by series," without any predetermined retirement date. He expressed his enjoyment in playing, contributing, and having fun on the field.

"I don’t know what I’ll be doing at the end of this week. I’ve mentioned before that I’m taking it day by day, series by series. We’ll see where things go. I feel good at the moment, enjoying my time, contributing, and having fun. There’s no specific end date for me, I’m still playing and enjoying it," Smith remarked.

Smith also commended the team’s collective efforts over the years, noting his role as a senior player in guiding younger teammates. He highlighted the shared contributions that have led to the team's recent successes.

"We have a fantastic team. Over the last few years, especially with two World Test Championship finals, various players have stepped up at different times. It’s never been just one or two individuals; it’s been a collective effort. I believe that’s what has made us a strong team. It’s been rewarding to be part of this, and as an experienced player, I hope to assist the younger players in understanding the nuances of Test cricket. That’s my role now," Smith concluded.
