London [UK], July 30: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced the appointment of Stephen Fleming as the new head coach for the England men's Test team, with Joe Root reinstated as the Test captain.

Fleming, who is celebrated as one of the top coaches in cricket, steps into this role after an impressive 18-year tenure with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where he led the team to five IPL championships and ten finals. The former New Zealand captain also boasts a remarkable playing record, having captained his national team in 80 Tests and achieving 28 victories.

His coaching experience extends to guiding Southern Brave to the final of The Hundred in 2023 and managing CSK's affiliate teams in South Africa and the USA, in addition to a stint with the Melbourne Stars. During his county career, he played for Middlesex, Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire, where he led Notts to a County Championship title in 2005.

Joe Root, who holds the record for the most successful Test captain in England's history with 27 wins from 65 matches, resumes his captaincy after previously leading the team from 2017 to 2022. He also served as interim captain during the recent Test against New Zealand at The Oval.

The ECB confirmed Fleming's selection following a thorough recruitment process that included several prominent candidates, with the panel unanimously supporting the New Zealander. Marcus Trescothick will remain as interim head coach for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan until Fleming officially takes over later this summer, after spending time with his family in New Zealand. He is expected to start preparing for England's Test tour of South Africa upon his arrival in the UK, as stated by the ECB.

Fleming expressed his gratitude for being appointed as England's Test head coach, calling it one of the most prestigious roles in cricket. He aims to build on the progress made under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes while focusing on nurturing emerging talent to ensure the team's long-term competitiveness.

He also shared his enthusiasm for collaborating with returning captain Joe Root, believing he can excel in his second term, and emphasized the importance of Harry Brook's ongoing development.

"I am incredibly excited to be joining England as Test Coach. It’s one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket, and I am honoured to be appointed. I am looking forward to working with the players and building on the gains made by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. The ambition is always to win now, but it’s also about ensuring the team is well-placed for the future. There is a lot of young talent in and around the team, and our aim is to help them fulfill their potential as world-class cricketers," Fleming stated.

Fleming added, "I’m particularly looking forward to working with Joe Root as Captain – a generational talent who has achieved so much already. There is still plenty more to come from him, and I’m excited to support him so he can thrive in this role in a different context than his first stint. I’m also eager to work with Harry Brook. The best players are never finished products, and helping Harry continue to develop his extraordinary talent and leadership will be an important part of this journey."

Reflecting on his own experiences, Fleming noted, "I know what it feels like to have the weight of leadership and international cricket take its toll, and when that happened to me, my love for the game was rekindled by going to Notts and winning the County Championship. English cricket gave that to me, and it is a privilege to have this chance to give something back."

In response, Joe Root expressed his excitement about returning as England's Test captain, calling the role both challenging and rewarding. He looks forward to leading the next generation of players after briefly resuming the captaincy during the New Zealand Test and noted that working alongside new head coach Stephen Fleming was a significant motivation.

Root remarked, "It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to be England Men’s Test captain again. The Test captaincy is a difficult but hugely rewarding job, and after enjoying a brief taste of it again working with [Brendon] McCullum last month, I am excited to lead this next generation of players forward. He has proved over a long period of time that he is an exceptional leader with a great knowledge of the game, and I am looking forward to working with him and helping to build a winning environment."

Rob Key, managing director of England Men's Cricket, praised Fleming as one of cricket's most respected figures, stating that the ECB is fortunate to have appointed a coach of his caliber. Key expressed confidence that Fleming could transform England's talented squad into a consistently world-class Test team and looked forward to his partnership with Root.
