Celebrating Achievements in Sports and Chess

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], November 2: The SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) recently celebrated the accomplishments of six student achievers and one alumna by awarding them cash prizes totaling Rs 23 lakh. This recognition was for their outstanding performances at the 2026 Asian Games and their success in international chess competitions.

During the ceremony, aptly named 'Celebrating the Asian Games Medal Winners and Three Chess Grandmasters', SRMIST Vice Chancellor Ravi Pachamuthu emphasized the vital role sports play in fostering discipline and mental resilience. He also highlighted the institution's commitment to preparing athletes for future Olympic events.

“Engagement in competition nurtures growth and enhances mental fortitude. This is why we actively promote sports, and our universities follow suit. With the Olympics in sight, we are focusing on mental preparation, and our director is training students accordingly,” Pachamuthu stated.

The event took place at Ramada Plaza in Guindy, Chennai, where the institution honored its students and alumna for their remarkable achievements in both sports and chess.

Indian squash player Shameena Riaz and sailor Nethra Kumanan expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the university's support, noting that it has been instrumental in their athletic journeys and has motivated them to strive for even greater accomplishments.

Shameena, who secured a bronze medal for India at the Asian Games, reflected on her achievement as a proud milestone, especially considering her family's legacy in the sport.

“Winning a bronze medal for India fills me with pride. In squash, this is one of the most significant events. My father has previously won both gold and silver medals, so following in his footsteps—even with a bronze—is an incredible feeling,” she shared.

She also acknowledged the university's role in her growth, stating that the recognition and financial reward would inspire her to work even harder.

“As a current student at SRM, I have received immense support from the institution. Being honored and receiving a substantial cash reward motivates us to strive for more medals for our country, state, and college,” Shameena added.

She mentioned that her immediate focus is on preparing for upcoming competitions.

“I am currently training rigorously—dedicating myself entirely to my preparation—so that I can compete in future events and achieve success,” she said.

Nethra also expressed her gratitude towards the university for facilitating her overseas travel, training, and participation in international competitions, which have enabled her to compete at the highest levels.

“We are all very thankful to our university for their support—allowing us to travel abroad, train, and compete. This backing is what enables us to perform at our best and achieve results,” Nethra remarked.

Discussing her future plans, the sailor stated that her primary goal is to help India secure qualification for the Olympic Games.

“My next objective is to assist India in qualifying for the Olympics. There are several events scheduled for January, and I will begin my training next week. The aim is to return from the Olympics with a significant achievement,” she concluded.

The ceremony recognized the institution's student athletes for their performances at the Asian Games, as well as chess players celebrated for their international successes.
