Sri Lankan Under-19 Cricketers Arrested for Invasion of Privacy
Incident Involving Under-19 Cricketers
Colombo, Sri Lanka - Two young cricketers from Sri Lanka's Under-19 team have been taken into custody following accusations of recording individuals while they were bathing at their hotel in Narahenpita, Colombo. They have since been released on a personal bail amounting to LKR 500,000 (approximately $1,564), as reported by a sports news outlet.
The arrests occurred earlier this week after complaints were lodged by female guests at the hotel, who alleged that they were filmed with mobile devices while in their bathrooms.
Authorities have indicated that the Narahenpita police are currently probing whether any of the recorded footage has been disseminated on social media or other online platforms.
The players were presented at the Aluthkade Magistrate's Court for their preliminary hearing and are scheduled to return to court on May 25.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has yet to announce any disciplinary actions regarding the incident. The organization has been undergoing significant changes recently, including the removal of previous officials and the establishment of a Transformation Committee.
Kumar Sangakkara was appointed as one of nine members on this committee, which was formed to oversee the operations of Sri Lanka Cricket following the government's decision to dismiss the former office bearers.
On April 29, SLC President Shammi Silva resigned immediately, as confirmed by an official statement from the board. The entire leadership structure, including all office bearers and Executive Committee members, has also resigned as part of this decision.
The Transformation Committee features notable figures such as Kumar Sangakkara, Roshan Mahanama, and Sidath Wettimuny, alongside individuals from corporate, legal, and political sectors, with Eran Wickramaratne appointed as its chair.
