Resignations Shake Up Sri Lanka Cricket

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is undergoing a significant transformation following a wave of resignations from its executive committee and board, initiated by President Shammi Silva on Wednesday. This move comes in response to public outcry and ongoing allegations of financial misconduct, prompting Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to advocate for a leadership change within the cricketing body. An interim committee is expected to be appointed by the government to oversee the management of the nation's cricketing affairs, which have been struggling.

According to an SLC media release, “The president of Sri Lanka Cricket, Mr. Shammi Silva, has resigned from his position, effective today.” The release also noted that other office bearers and members of the Executive Committee have submitted their resignations as well. The decision to resign was formally communicated to Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage, and President Dissanayake. These resignations reportedly followed a collective decision by the SLC executive committee to step down on Tuesday.

Silva, who took over the presidency of SLC in February 2019, succeeded Thilanga Sumathipala, who faced similar corruption allegations. Initially seen as aligned with Sumathipala, Silva gradually established his authority and completed four consecutive terms, three of which were uncontested. Despite the men's and women's teams winning Asia Cup titles, Sri Lanka struggled to achieve consistent international success during his seven-year leadership. The men's team saw a decline in rankings and faced disappointing exits from the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups, as well as finishing ninth in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Calls for a change in leadership have persisted, even after the recent appointment of Gary Kirsten as head coach of the men's team.

Potential ICC Involvement

Will ICC Intervene?

The International Cricket Council (ICC) may face challenges regarding this situation, as it has historically been reluctant to accept temporary administrations in Sri Lankan cricket. In 2015, the Wettimuny-led committee was regarded merely as 'observers' by the ICC, which withheld funding until elections were conducted. Following Kamal Padmasiri's designation as a competent authority in 2018, the ICC imposed a strict six-month election timeline and warned of sanctions if the board remained under state control.

In November 2023, the ICC suspended Sri Lanka's membership after then-sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe utilized statutory powers to dissolve the board, leading to funding being withheld and the relocation of the Under-19 World Cup. Despite ongoing allegations of domestic corruption, the ICC has consistently stated that it will only recognize democratically elected administrations.
