Thunderstorms Disrupt Spain's Training Plans

New York [US], July 18: Spain's last training session before the FIFA World Cup final against Argentina was called off on Saturday due to severe thunderstorms, as confirmed by FIFA.

FIFA stated that no alternative training time would be provided for Spain, and it remained unclear if Argentina's planned session later that day would proceed as scheduled, according to reports.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced, "The training session for the national team at the Melanie Lane Training Ground in New Jersey has been suspended in line with US storm safety protocols."

Currently, the players are engaged in an indoor warm-up session.

Spain, the current European champions, are striving for their first FIFA World Cup title since 2010, while Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, aims to secure consecutive championships.

Argentina, the defending champions, achieved a dramatic 2-1 victory over England in the semifinals, coming back from a first-half deficit. Enzo Fernandez equalized before Lautaro Martinez scored the decisive goal in stoppage time, propelling Argentina into the final against Spain.

This victory marked Argentina's advancement to the World Cup 2026 final, while England's quest for their first World Cup final appearance since 1966 ended in disappointment.

Spain reached the FIFA World Cup final for the first time since their 2010 victory, having defeated France 2-0 in a solid performance. Lamine Yamal was instrumental in the win, winning a penalty after taking the ball from Lucas Digne, which Mikel Oyarzabal converted in the 22nd minute. Pedro Porro extended Spain's lead after halftime, following a well-executed play with Dani Olmo, while France struggled to create significant scoring opportunities.
