Spain's Quarter-Final Showdown with Belgium

Los Angeles [US], July 10: Luis de la Fuente, the head coach of Spain, has labeled Belgium as the most formidable opponent his team has encountered in the FIFA World Cup 2026 thus far. He emphasized that his players are entirely focused on the crucial quarter-final match, even though La Roja is seen as the favorite to advance to the semi-finals against France.

Spain has made an impressive journey to the quarter-finals, winning all five of their matches without allowing a single goal. Their strong defense, possession-oriented style, and attacking prowess have positioned them as serious contenders for the championship.

“Tomorrow’s match will be the toughest we’ve faced so far,” de la Fuente stated during a press conference. “Belgium is a very strong team with players accustomed to winning. It’s going to be a tough contest,” he added.

The winner of this quarter-final in Los Angeles will go on to meet France in the semi-finals, following Les Bleus' 2-0 victory over Morocco earlier on Thursday. However, de la Fuente is not looking past Belgium.

“We are solely focused on Belgium for tomorrow,” he affirmed.

Leading Spain's attack is Mikel Oyarzabal, who has netted four goals in the tournament, while 18-year-old Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal has also made an impact, scoring once. De la Fuente expressed confidence in Yamal’s ability to shine on such a significant stage.

“He’s going to make a difference in attack,” the coach remarked, commending Yamal’s maturity and defensive efforts during Spain’s 1-0 victory over Portugal in the Round of 16.

Highlighting that Spain's achievements stem from teamwork rather than individual talent, de la Fuente referenced a quote from Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius: “What is bad for the hive is also bad for the bee.”

Former Indian international Robin Singh believes that the midfield battle will be crucial in determining the outcome between these two European giants.

As per a Zee5 report, Robin noted that Spain’s possession-based strategy will clash with Belgium’s potent counter-attacking style, spearheaded by Kevin De Bruyne, Jeremy Doku, and Leandro Trossard.

“The team that controls the midfield is likely to win,” Robin stated.

He also advised Spain to adopt a more direct approach in their attack. “Spain needs to be more incisive through the center. They have had possession but struggled to penetrate Belgium’s defense. The wingers should cut in to support Oyarzabal, while overlapping full-backs provide width. Instead of moving the ball laterally, Spain should focus on playing through the middle, with Pedri exploiting spaces between the lines. Yamal should also be utilized in one-on-one situations to create problems for Belgium,” he suggested.

Robin cautioned that Belgium has the speed to exploit any gaps left by Spain in defense. “If Belgium pushes their full-backs forward, Trossard and Doku can create issues. An early goal could force Spain to open up, and with Lukaku coming on in the second half, Belgium gains another attacking threat, particularly against the young Cubarsi,” he added.

Spain enters this match aiming for their second consecutive World Cup semi-final and remains the only team yet to concede a goal in the tournament, boasting six consecutive clean sheets in World Cup history. Belgium, on the other hand, is determined to break Spain’s defensive record and secure a spot in the final four.
