Spain Triumphs Over Portugal in Dramatic Finish

Dallas [US], July 7: In a thrilling FIFA World Cup round of 16 match, Spain clinched a narrow 1-0 victory against Portugal thanks to a last-minute goal from substitute Mikel Merino. This decisive strike in the 91st minute eliminated the Cristiano Ronaldo-led team from the tournament, much to the delight of the enthusiastic Dallas crowd on Monday.

The encounter was packed with scoring opportunities for both teams, but it was the late-game substitutions of Ferran Torres and Merino that proved pivotal for Spain, marking the end of Ronaldo's World Cup journey spanning six tournaments.

The match kicked off with Lamine Yamal's foul on Joao Neves, drawing ire from Portugal's coach Roberto Martinez. Mikel Oyarzabal attempted the first shot on goal in the fourth minute, but it was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Portugal's Joao Cancelo also tried from distance, while Spain maintained their attacking momentum, with Oyarzabal missing another chance aimed at the far corner.

Bruno Fernandes set up Ronaldo in the 11th minute, who skillfully maneuvered past Aymeric Laporte but saw his shot parried away by Unai Simon for a corner.

In the 16th minute, Yamal's left-footed effort and a rebound from Alex Baena posed a threat, but Portugal managed to clear the danger. A free kick awarded to Portugal in the 21st minute yielded no results as they headed into a hydration break.

Spain continued to control the game until Ronaldo attempted an acrobatic shot, but Simon was there to deny him. Pedro Neto's cross found Joao Felix, whose header set up Ronaldo for another attempt, which was again saved.

Joao Felix, who was a key player for Portugal, suffered a shoulder injury in the 39th minute after colliding with an advertising board. Just before half-time, Nuno Mendes struck from the edge of the box, but his shot hit the crossbar after deflecting off Pedro Porro.

As the first half concluded, both Ronaldo and Yamal had opportunities, but the score remained 0-0. Spain held a slight edge in possession at nearly 55%, with eight shots compared to Portugal's five and 11 touches in the opposition box against Portugal's four.

Upon resuming play, Ronaldo was fouled by Olmo, leading to a free kick that Fernandes sent directly into Simon's hands. In the 59th minute, Ronaldo had a chance when Felix set him up, but his volley went wide.

The deadlock persisted as Fernandes squandered another opportunity, hitting the side netting with a powerful volley that failed to find the net.

In stoppage time, Mikel Merino sealed Portugal's fate with a brilliant goal. Following a free kick, Fabian Ruiz found Ferran Torres, who passed to Merino, allowing him to finish clinically into the bottom corner.

Bernardo Silva missed a crucial chance for Portugal, and another free kick went well off target, ultimately ending Portugal's World Cup campaign and concluding Ronaldo's participation in the tournament.
