Austria's World Cup Journey Ends with a Heavy Loss

Inglewood, California - Austria's aspirations in the FIFA World Cup 2026 came to a disappointing halt on Thursday as they faced a formidable Spanish team, who triumphed with a decisive 3-0 victory in the Round of 32. Following the match, President Alexander Van der Bellen expressed his admiration for the team's efforts despite the setback.

In a post shared on X, Van der Bellen remarked, "Our @oefb1904 (Austria Football) national team’s World Cup journey concludes in Los Angeles. Spain, the European champions, proved too powerful. I know you’re feeling let down – but you gave it your all. The entire nation was captivated. Thank you for your hard work!"

Spain showcased their status as one of the tournament favorites with another impressive performance, maintaining their streak of not conceding any goals and securing a spot in the Round of 16.

Mikel Oyarzabal shone brightly, netting two goals, while Pedro Porro scored his first international goal, as Luis de la Fuente’s squad thoroughly outclassed Ralf Rangnick’s team.

The match began with Spain on the offensive, as Lamine Yamal forced an early save from Alexander Schlager. Aymeric Laporte also posed a threat from consecutive corners. Marc Cucurella found the net, but his goal was disallowed due to a foul on the Austrian goalkeeper.

Schlager made several remarkable saves to keep Austria in the game, denying attempts from both Yamal and Oyarzabal. However, Spain's persistent pressure paid off just before halftime when Cucurella delivered a precise cross that Oyarzabal finished with composure. Alex Baena nearly increased the lead shortly after, but his stunning free-kick hit the crossbar.

Austria had a brief moment of hope after the break when substitute Sasa Kalajdzic's header went just over the bar, but Spain maintained control throughout.

The second goal came when Porro headed home Baena’s inviting cross, marking his first goal for the national team. Spain continued to dominate possession and opportunities, with David Alaba making a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Yamal.

Oyarzabal completed his brace late in the match, converting another precise cross from Cucurella, capping off a stellar performance and securing a comprehensive 3-0 victory.

This result propels Spain into the Round of 16, boasting four clean sheets and rising confidence as they await the outcome of the match between Portugal and Croatia.

Austria exits the tournament after reaching the knockout stage for the first time since 1954, earning praise from fans and their president despite the heavy loss.
