Spain and Belgium Honor Almeria Fire Victims Before World Cup Match
Tribute to Almeria Fire Victims
On July 11, in California, players from Spain and Belgium took a moment to remember the victims of the devastating Almeria wildfires by observing a minute of silence prior to their FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal match at the Los Angeles Stadium.
The Spanish Men's National Football Team shared this poignant moment on social media, extending their condolences to those impacted by the tragedy.
Their official account on X stated, "A respectful minute of silence at the Los Angeles stadium to honor the victims of the Almeria fires. Rest in peace."
The wildfires in southern Spain's Andalusia region have tragically claimed the lives of at least 11 individuals, with 19 others still unaccounted for, and around 600 residents forced to evacuate as firefighting efforts continue amidst shifting wind conditions.
The Regional Government of Andalusia confirmed the death toll from the wildfire that erupted in Los Gallardos, correcting earlier reports that suggested 12 fatalities.
Currently, the fire is impacting the municipalities of Los Gallardos, Bedar, and Antas in Almeria province. Approximately 600 individuals remain displaced, with around 120 residents evacuated overnight from various neighborhoods including Almocaizar, Fuente del Albarico, Los Pinos, La Serena, and the Pinar area of Bedar.
Authorities have provided shelter for 74 evacuees at the Lubrin theatre and another 74 at the Garrucha theatre. Antonio Sanz Cabello, the Minister of the Presidency, Health, and Emergencies in Andalusia, urged residents to adhere strictly to safety directives during this emergency.
"I appeal to everyone’s sense of responsibility. In emergencies, the instructions from authorities are not mere suggestions; they are crucial for saving lives. If evacuation or confinement is ordered, please comply immediately and follow the designated routes," Sanz emphasized in a post on X, while also thanking emergency responders and public agencies for their coordinated efforts in combating the wildfire in Los Gallardos.
