South Korea Stages Comeback to Defeat Czech Republic 2-1 in FIFA World Cup 2026 Clash
South Korea Triumphs Over Czech Republic in World Cup Showdown
Zapopan [Mexico], June 12: In an exhilarating Group A match at the FIFA World Cup 2026, South Korea rallied to secure a 2-1 victory against the Czech Republic at Estadio Akron on Friday, claiming three crucial points.
The Taegeuk Warriors started strong, creating several opportunities early on. Lee Han-beom nearly opened the scoring with a header that skimmed just over the bar, while Lee Kang-in forced a notable save from Czech goalkeeper Matej Kovar with a fierce long-range shot.
As the match progressed, the Czech Republic found their rhythm and almost capitalized on a set piece, but captain Tomas Soucek missed the target after finding space in the box. Despite South Korea's aggressive play, clear chances were limited before halftime.
Son Heung-min came closest to scoring just before the break, making a promising run but ultimately sending his shot wide, leaving the teams tied at 0-0 at halftime.
After the interval, South Korea continued to press, frequently testing Kovar, who made vital saves against Hwang In-beom, Lee Jae-sung, and Son, keeping the Czechs in contention.
However, the Czech Republic struck first just before the hour mark. Vladimir Coufal's long throw found captain Ladislav Krejci, who headed it past Kim Seung-gyu, marking his sixth international goal.
South Korea quickly responded, with Hwang In-beom equalizing midway through the second half, setting the stage for a thrilling finish.
The Czechs thought they had regained the lead when Soucek scored, but their celebrations were cut short by an offside call. In the dying moments, substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu capitalized on a brilliant pass from Hwang, scoring from close range to complete the comeback.
Despite a late push from the Czech Republic, Kim made a crucial save to deny substitute Adam Hlozek. South Korea held on for the win, positioning themselves well for their next Group A match against co-hosts Mexico, while the Czech Republic aims to recover against South Africa.
