South Africa's Disappointing Exit from T20 World Cup

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], March 5: After South Africa's defeat to New Zealand in the T20 World Cup semifinal, coach Shukri Conrad described the loss as a "bloody walloping." Meanwhile, Finn Allen, who scored a remarkable century, expressed confidence in facing either India or England in the final on Sunday.

Allen's record-setting century, achieved in just 33 balls, marked the fastest century in both T20 and 50-over World Cups, leading to a decisive nine-wicket victory for the Blackcaps at Eden Gardens. Despite a valiant effort from Tristan Stubbs (29) and Marco Jansen (55*), who helped the Proteas recover from 77/5 to 169/8, it wasn't enough.

This defeat marked South Africa's first loss to New Zealand in T20 World Cups after five encounters, and it was their fourth consecutive defeat to the Kiwis in ICC knockout matches, following losses in the 2011 World Cup quarterfinal, the 2015 semifinal, and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy semifinal.

In the post-match press conference, Conrad stated that his team never truly got into the game, emphasizing that it wasn't a case of choking but rather a significant defeat. He remarked, "To choke, you need to have a sniff of the game, and we didn't have that. We were thoroughly outplayed tonight."

Despite the loss, Conrad expressed pride in his team's achievements, noting that many had doubted their ability to reach the semifinals given their prior form. He acknowledged the criticism that would follow but maintained that the team had accomplished many special things.

Conrad admitted that New Zealand's bowlers exploited the conditions effectively, particularly their spinners, and that South Africa struggled to find their rhythm. He commented, "They were much better than us tonight," and highlighted the challenges of T20 cricket, where early wickets can lead to a downward spiral.

He also pointed out that Stubbs' dismissal came at a crucial moment when the team was gaining momentum, and criticized their management of the final over, which he felt was poorly executed.

On the other hand, Finn Allen credited the bowlers for their impressive performance, stating that their early efforts set the tone for the match. He emphasized the significance of their recent T20 series against India, which helped prepare them for the World Cup.

Allen expressed hope that his parents were proud of his performance and praised his opening partner, Tim Seifert, for his aggressive batting style, which allowed him to play a supportive role. He remarked, "Batting with Timmy is great fun; he makes it easy for me to contribute."

When asked about their potential opponents in the final, Allen confidently stated, "We can beat anybody," and expressed excitement about their momentum heading into the weekend.
