A Promising Start for the Proteas

Cape Town [South Africa], November 2: Shukri Conrad, the head coach of South Africa, is optimistic that the recent Test series victory against Australia marks just the beginning of their journey. He expressed confidence in his team's potential to enhance their performance as they aim for a second consecutive ICC World Test Championship title.

The Proteas demonstrated their prowess by clinching a 2-1 series win over Australia in the recently concluded home matches. This success has elevated South Africa to the second position in the World Test Championship standings, bolstering their chances of qualifying for the final next year.

While Conrad appreciated his team's efforts against the Australians, he acknowledged that there is still significant room for growth as they strive to build on this success throughout the ongoing WTC cycle.

Looking ahead, the Proteas have a packed Test schedule, featuring a two-match home series against Bangladesh, followed by three matches against England, and two fixtures against Sri Lanka, all crucial for their pursuit of a spot in the WTC final.

Conrad remarked, "I believe there are still a few aspects we can improve to become our best version. Just a few days ago, I wouldn't have imagined standing here, but I’m not surprised either, as this team has the potential to achieve remarkable things," as reported on the ICC website.

He also mentioned that determining South Africa's optimal playing XI is an ongoing process, emphasizing the need to rotate the squad to find the right balance and combinations for winning individual Tests and series.

This strategy may require tough selection decisions, including possibly sidelining players who were instrumental in South Africa's first World Test Championship victory at Lord's last year, while also giving chances to emerging talents. Conrad implemented this approach during the Australia series, providing opportunities to players like Marques Ackerman and Matthew Breetzke.

"We’re focused on assembling the best XI. We just need to find the right roles for them. It's essential for players to be adaptable. Take Marques, for instance; he has seamlessly transitioned into Test cricket. He may still make mistakes due to his playing style, but I want to ensure he can express himself fully," he added.

Although Conrad recognizes that his team is in a strong position to qualify for another World Test Championship final, he remains cautious and is concentrating on the immediate challenge of hosting Bangladesh for two Tests later this month.

"Every Test series is crucial, and the next one is always the most significant of the summer," Conrad stated.

"Bangladesh will arrive with fast bowlers who can be quite effective on the Highveld surfaces. Let’s not forget they recently defeated Australia. It’s vital for us to build on our strengths, identify areas for improvement, and ensure we are ready to face Bangladesh in a few weeks," Conrad concluded.
