South African Youngster Kwena Maphaka Shines Despite T20I Loss to Australia
Maphaka's Impressive Performance
Darwin [Australia], August 11: After South Africa's defeat against Australia in the opening T20I, Ryan Rickelton, a South African batsman, praised the young pacer Kwena Maphaka. At just 18 years old, Maphaka made history by becoming the youngest player for the Proteas to achieve a four-wicket haul in T20Is, showcasing his 'fiery character' on the field.
Despite the 17-run loss, Maphaka's bowling was a standout moment for the Proteas. He made an early impact by dismissing Mitchell Owen, leaving Australia struggling at 73/5. Although Tim David was putting up a strong fight with his impressive 83 runs off 52 balls, Maphaka managed to claim his wicket while conceding only 14 runs in 11 deliveries, including six dot balls.
Interestingly, Maphaka engaged in a verbal exchange with David, who is a decade older, which Rickelton noted as indicative of Maphaka's competitive spirit.
Rickelton remarked, 'He is quite a fiery character. But he is very relaxed, very quiet in the change room. He had a bit of a go at Tim (David) there, but he is very competitive. He backs his ability, which is great. It is cool to see a young guy stand up to Australia in their backyard. It is very promising for South African cricket.'
Rickelton further added, 'He is quite a relaxed guy in the change room, but when he crosses that line, he has got a bit of white-line fever, which is quite exciting for us.'
Maphaka's rise has been remarkable; he was named 'Player of the Tournament' at the 2024 Under-19 World Cup, taking 21 wickets at an average of 9.71. This performance earned him a contract with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, where he played two matches in the 2024 season.
In his ODI debut against Pakistan last December, Maphaka impressed with speeds reaching 151 kph. Just two weeks later, he became South Africa's youngest Test player at 18 years and 270 days.
In total, he has played 13 international matches, claiming 18 wickets at an average of 31.77. In nine T20Is, he has taken 10 wickets at an average of 28.00, with an economy rate of 8.84. As he approaches his 20th birthday next year, Maphaka is expected to play a significant role in the upcoming T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
