South Africa's Dominant Performance in Durban
Durban [South Africa], September 24: Under the leadership of Temba Bavuma, South Africa showcased a remarkable all-round display to secure a 67-run victory against Australia in the opening ODI held in Durban on Thursday.
This match marked the first encounter between the two teams in this format since Australia triumphed over South Africa during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023.
After winning the toss, Australia chose to bowl first. Josh Hazlewood made an early impact for the visitors, and Nathan Ellis dismissed Quinton de Kock (18) with his very first delivery in the eighth over, leaving South Africa struggling at 29/2.
Matthew Breetzke then stepped up to stabilize the innings with a well-paced and assertive performance. His excellent shot selection and ability to find gaps led him to score his second ODI century.
Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, with Bavuma contributing 30 runs and Ryan Rickelton adding 27, South Africa remained competitive. Breetzke found a strong ally in Marco Jansen, who accelerated the innings with a rapid 75 runs off just 59 balls. Their partnership propelled South Africa close to the 300-run mark, although they ultimately finished three runs shy of that target.
Ellis emerged as Australia's standout bowler, taking 3 wickets for 57 runs, while Adam Zampa secured 2 wickets for 50 runs.
In response, Australia started their chase with aggression, led by Mitchell Marsh, who scored a quick 60 runs off 36 balls before being dismissed by Keshav Maharaj in the 10th over, with the score at 90.
This wicket prompted Bavuma to utilize his spinners, and both Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin soon applied pressure on the Australian batting lineup. Maharaj concluded with impressive figures of 4 wickets for 20 runs, while Fortuin took 2 wickets for 34 runs, allowing South Africa to tighten their grip on the match.
Despite contributions from Travis Head (36), Cooper Connolly (38), and Matt Renshaw (44), Australia struggled to maintain the momentum established by Marsh. Their middle and lower order faltered against South Africa's spin attack, leading to their eventual dismissal and handing the hosts a 67-run victory.
The second ODI is scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on Sunday, followed by the third and final match of the three-game series. After this series, the teams will transition to an ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 series.
