South Africa Makes History by Advancing to FIFA World Cup Knockouts
Historic Achievement for South African Football
Guadalupe, Mexico - On June 25, South African footballer Moremi expressed immense pride after his team secured a spot in the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time in history. His teammate, Relebohile Mofokeng, noted the team's continuous improvement and pledged to strive for further success.
A remarkable goal from Thapelo Maseko propelled South Africa into the record books, leading to a 1-0 victory over South Korea in their final group match, which allowed them to finish second in Group A. At just 22 years and 225 days, Maseko became the second youngest player to score for South Africa in a World Cup.
In a post-match interview with FIFA, Moremi stated, "I feel incredibly proud and blessed. We have made history. It was not easy, but I am thrilled we pulled it off. Our focus now turns to winning the next match: we know we can do it."
Mofokeng shared this optimism, asserting that the team is determined to advance as far as possible, expressing confidence in their capabilities. He remarked, "We will fight to go as far as possible; we truly believe in our ability to achieve this; we will trust in God and give everything we have to get where we want to be."
After a challenging start with a 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico, South Africa rebounded with a 1-1 draw against Czechia and the crucial win over South Korea, securing their place in the round of 32. Mofokeng emphasized the importance of evolving as a team in international football, stating, "You must learn from past mistakes to sharpen up for the next match; failing to do so only leads to defeat. We grew into the tournament game by game, and that is what matters most in football."
In recent years, South Africa has made significant strides in football, achieving a bronze medal in the 2024 CAF African Cup of Nations, their first podium finish since winning the title in 1996. This success has bolstered the team's confidence as they return to the World Cup after a 12-year absence. South African clubs are also thriving, with Mamelodi Sundowns finishing as runners-up in the 2025 CAF Champions League and winning the 2026 title shortly before the World Cup.
Mofokeng remarked, "South African football is evolving season after season. This generation is truly incredible. I believe I am playing alongside some of the best players in the world; their performances are outstanding, and the majority of us play domestically."
He added, "We are doing well for our country, and we must keep fighting for it, because if you do not fight, no one else will do it for you. We just need to keep working hard to elevate our nation on the global football map."
South Africa is set to face Canada at the Los Angeles Stadium on June 28, marking the beginning of their knockout phase.
