South Africa Triumphs in Fourth T20 Match

In a gripping encounter, South Africa emerged victorious over New Zealand by 19 runs in the fourth T20 match, leveling the five-match series at 2-2. The Proteas' spinners played a crucial role in this win, stifling the New Zealand batting lineup.

Connor Esterhuizen showcased his talent with a remarkable half-century, scoring 57 runs off just 33 deliveries, which proved pivotal for South Africa as they posted a total of 164-5 after opting to bat first.

New Zealand started strong, reaching 63-2 during the powerplay, with Tim Robinson contributing 32 runs from 22 balls. However, the debutant Prenelan Subrayen made a significant impact, taking 2 wickets for just 13 runs, while Keshav Maharaj claimed 2-22, dismantling the New Zealand middle order.

Dane Cleaver, returning to the squad after nearly three years, scored 26 runs off 16 balls but was dismissed by Subrayen. Jimmy Neesham, who scored 10, faced a tough time, being dropped twice before finally being caught off Ottneil Baartman's bowling.

Maharaj's bowling proved effective as he dismissed Nick Kelly (16) and Cole McConchie (10), showcasing the spinners' ability to control the game with their variations.

New Zealand's captain, Jimmy Neesham, reflected on the match, stating, "I thought a total of 164 was about par, maybe a bit below par. We certainly had a chance going into the second half of the game. A few average options and poor execution led us to this defeat." The team faced additional challenges with injuries to key players like Tom Latham, Devon Conway, Mitchell Santner, and Lockie Ferguson.

Esterhuizen's innings was crucial, especially after South Africa lost Wiaan Mulder early in the innings. He quickly accelerated the scoring rate, hitting multiple boundaries and maintaining a strong run rate, leading to a powerplay score of 50-1.

Esterhuizen reached his half-century in the 10th over, hitting six fours and three sixes during his innings. He expressed his approach, saying, "I just tried to keep it as simple as possible. I didn’t have much time to think about it because I was out there straight away."

Despite his impressive performance, Esterhuizen was eventually caught by debutant Katene Clarke, who made a spectacular catch. Tony de Zorzi, who partnered with Esterhuizen for an 81-run stand, contributed 23 runs before being dismissed.

Rubin Hermann and Dian Forrester added 38 runs for the fourth wicket, with Forrester scoring 19 before being trapped lbw. Hermann remained not out at 28, while Jason Smith and George Linde chipped in with 19 and 14 runs, respectively. New Zealand managed to restrict South Africa's scoring towards the end, allowing only 43 runs in the last five overs.

The series-deciding match will take place in Christchurch on Wednesday.
